Sydney council plans major e-bike reduction
A Sydney council has released new plans to slash the number of shared electric bikes operating across local roads by over forty percent.

A major plan has been revealed to strip thousands of shared electric bikes from local streets as authorities grapple with rising complaints over footpath congestion. According to reports from the Sydney Morning Herald, a Sydney council has released proposals to slash the number of shared e-bikes across its roads by more than forty percent, effectively removing up to 5000 vehicles from circulation. The initiative marks a significant shift in how local governments manage dockless micro-mobility services across urban neighborhoods.
The proposed crackdown addresses mounting frustrations from pedestrians who frequently encounter abandoned or poorly parked bicycles blocking walkways, disabled access ramps, and building entrances. Community groups and local advocates have pointed out that cluttered footpaths create hazardous conditions, particularly for elderly residents, parents pushing prams, and people with vision or mobility impairments who rely completely on clear pathways for safe daily travel.
Despite the pressing need for better infrastructure to manage the growing micro-mobility sector, local authorities have been slow to secure financial assistance from state programs. City Hub Sydney reported that various Sydney councils are yet to take up available government grants designed specifically to fix obstructive e-bike parking by building designated docking bays, digital geofencing solutions, and clearly marked painted parking zones across high-traffic urban areas.
Industry operators and transport planners now face increased pressure to work alongside municipal leaders to establish stricter operational guidelines, mandatory geofencing, and improved fleet distribution models. City Hub Sydney reported that municipal authorities have not yet accessed the specific funding allocations provided to resolve these ongoing street parking and pedestrian obstruction issues.
