Sydney dogs and cats home opens permanent facility in Kurnell
Sydney Dogs and Cats Home has officially reopened its doors at a new permanent site in Kurnell following a government-backed expansion.

Sydney Dogs and Cats Home has officially reopened its doors at a new permanent site in Kurnell, marking a major expansion for animal welfare services in the region.
The facility represents the organization's first permanent home since leaving Carlton in 2021, following years of operating from temporary locations.
The new location spans 20,000 square metres in the Sutherland Shire on Crown land.
The Minns Labor Government contributed $14.3 million to make the project possible, fulfilling an election commitment to save the shelter from potential closure.
The expanded site more than doubles the organization's previous capacity.
Organisers announced that the centre will enable care for more than 3,000 animals each year as rescue demand rises due to cost of living pressures.
The facility is equipped to facilitate more than 2,000 adoptions annually.
It will also help reunite more than 1,000 lost pets with their families each year and support more than 800 animals through foster care programs.
Sydney Dogs and Cats Home provides contracted pound services for eight local councils across Sydney.
These participating areas include Georges River, Inner West, Lane Cove, North Sydney, Parramatta, Randwick, Strathfield, and Waverley.
The new centre provides greater scope to grow volunteer networks and community outreach initiatives.
Construction of the site was led by NSW Public Works, with professional development opportunities also planned for veterinary and animal care students.
The organisation receives approximately 150 calls each week from community members seeking support for neglected or abandoned animals.
The new Kurnell infrastructure is designed to alleviate pressure on staff and provide a comprehensive refuge for pets awaiting permanent homes.
