Southwest Metro Line to Open on October 30 Following Regulator Approval
The final stage of Sydney's M1 metro line to Bankstown will open with 10 new stations on October 30 after receiving regulatory approval.
Sydney's Southwest Metro line will officially open to passengers on October 30 after receiving approval from the regulator, Railway Supply reported. The announcement locks in the opening date for the final stage of Sydney's M1 metro line, according to reporting from The Sydney Morning Herald and The Daily Telegraph. Sydney Metro also stated that the wait is almost over following the confirmation of the official opening date, while Rail Express, 9Now, Time Out Worldwide, and City Hub Sydney likewise reported that the Southwest Sydney Metro opening date has finally been revealed.
According to News.com.au, the opening will bring 10 new Metro stations into service. Both News.com.au and The Guardian reported that the launch of the long-awaited extension to Sydney's metro line next week has been described as a "huge moment", with 7NEWS also noting that the Sydney Metro extension opens next week.
The Sydney Southwest Metro is set to open after a 130yo train line was replaced along the corridor, ABC News reported. When the new services begin running, the Metro will depart from platform one at Bankstown, according to The Sydney Morning Herald. In separate rail industry news, Rail Express reported that the government has announced a preferred site for a train building factory.
The rail milestone coincides with major aviation developments across the region. Time Out Worldwide reported that Sydney's new international airport is opening this weekend, and ABC News reported that the new Sydney airport has welcomed its first passengers while honouring a trailblazing pilot. In addition, Destination NSW confirmed Qatar Airways for Western Sydney International Airport. Even so, the Australian Financial Review reported that having no fast rail will limit the take-off of Sydney's new airport.
